Use it for ordered processes such as sign-up or checkout. “Which page comes next” is Paths, and “are they back tomorrow” is Retention.
ConsoleAll-platform analyticsBehaviorBehavior analysisHow to configure
The measurement is the steps: at least 2, at most 20. A step is event names or page paths (several names are OR, paths may use a wildcard) and can carry its own filters.
Behavior is the conversion rule. The window defaults to 7 days, in minutes, hours, or days, and cannot exceed 180 days. Order is ordered (other events may sit between steps), strict (no other funnel-step event between two steps), or any order. Counting defaults to unique: the first entry per subject per session, then distinct subjects. Attempts count each session entry. Steps can be required to share one session. Up to 5 exclusion events drop a conversion if they occur between steps. A hold property requires the same value on every step.
Breakdown uses only the first layer and keeps the 10 groups with the most entries. There is no compare period. Identity defaults to person. Time, filters, and segments are in Measurement × Behavior.
How to read the result
Each step shows count, rate versus step one, rate versus the previous step, drop-off, and median time from the previous step. The summary is entered, converted, overall rate, and median time to complete. The largest drop is marked. A trend plots the conversion rate by entry time. Click a step to see people who arrived, or people who dropped there.
Limits & definitions
The query extends the end of the range by one window so a last step just after the range still counts. Timing uses at most 20,000 completed samples; intermediate steps are sampled again when there are 6 steps or fewer. Unique counting lets one subject contribute once. Strict order blocks other step events, not events outside the funnel. People who never finish are absent from the time distribution.
